Bird Conservation

Flamingos once soared around the island of Anegada by the hundreds but were hunted to extinction from the island over 50 years ago.

In 1991 with the assistance of other conservation partners, such as the Conservation Agency and the Bermuda Aquarium and Natural History Museum and Zoo, the National Parks Trust reintorduced 18 Roseate Flamingos on Anegada.

In 1995 the project got a major boost when five chicks were hatched. These 5 hatchlings have completed a significant portion of their life cycle as they have also laid eggs and hatched a new generation in June of 1997. Between July 16th and July 24th 1998, seven more hatchlings were born bringing the total number of Flamingos to 41.

The Flamingos have settled into their new home very well and live mainly around the large pounds of Anegada.
